I think Shintaro better retire from the Zatoichi films earlier. He was too old to play a Zatoichi and you can tell from his last few films. He was just too old to play a swordsman.
Although I do not speak or read Japanese, what I love most about Zatoichi movies, he alway defending the weak, fighting corruption, for even the Yakutia must live by a code, and government officials, must be fair and honest, while being respectful others, especially women and children is the most important aspect of a great and ancient cultural, although guns have made the olds ways of fight, somewhat obsolete, but because Japan has such strict gun laws, it is one of the safest countries today, gun are so uncivilized, although every country has it problems, the people are educated and have one of the longest life expectancy in the world…but everywhere where their is expire the poverty, and the wealth gap keep widening, there is much social problems, and unrest…so in conclusion, may the spirit of Zatoichi, always be a guiding light in Japan culture, for the measure of a great nation is not technology, but how it treats the least of their people…Peace!
I’m so pleased I found these movies and the tv shows they are great entertainment , I don’t understand why we didn’t get this in the west he would have been a big star ,
Shintaro Katsu is a TREASURE. He brought realism to his character ..the Blind Swordsman…..loved every episode. He had humility that the Samurai lacked. He brought this character to life like few actors ever have. Wish they'd show the original series over here

勝新太郎さんの座頭市を初めて見た時
画面に映っている市の動きが本当に盲目の方で
盲目の方が演じてるのかと思った位で
目が見えてる役者さんだよと母に言われ驚愕した。
私は昔、京都の太秦に有った東洋現像所の映画部業務課という、受付も兼ねた営業事務的な部所で働いていました。
東洋現像所の直ぐ側に、勝プロダクションの事務所が有り、勝さんが何時も東洋現像所の試写室に現像が出来たフィルムの試写に来られてました。
私が「いらっませ、何時も有難うございます」と、勝さんに言うと、「うちのスタッフの若い者も、お世話になり何時も有難うね」と、来られる度に穏やかな笑顔で言って下さいました。
周りのどんな方にも同じ目線で話して下さり、私の様な事務員にも偉そうに言われる事は無かったです。車はゴールドのリンカーンを自分で運転され、来られてました。
もっと長生きして頂き、色んな映画やドラマに出て頂きたかったです。
このYou Tubeを見て、勝さんの笑顔を懐かしく思い出しました。

I liked Zatoichi movies shot in the 60s.
The latest ones failed to portray some of his moral features.
香取慎吾さんや北野武さんが座頭市をしましたが勝新太郎さんの座頭市に、勝てない。香取慎吾さんと北野武さんの座頭市は、偽物だからdvd借りて見たが30分以内に、見るのを止めました。しかし勝新太郎さんの座頭市は、全シリーズ本物だから見ても素晴らしい。
俳優、勝新太郎は強さの中に愛くるしさが有った。
人間、勝新太郎には、男臭さの中に艶が有った。
