No mysterious powers of flying through the air like cheap Chinese martial arts movies. Only true and accurate versions of battle. Like in warfare you are alive and with no drama a life is lost.
I'm seeing this timeless masterpiece in IMAX at the BFI centre this month, seriously can't wait for the final battle on a screen larger than my flat.

I cannot decide who my favourite samurai was. It was either this expertise man who is samurai code in purity, or, the 'fake' farmboy samurai who just strove with boldness and no hesitation.

If you put it in slo-mo it does not show that Kyuzu was faster in the sparring. Unfortunately.

The samurai was hella arrogant tho. If he really didn’t want to kill him he could’ve just let him have the draw and move on, but instead he had to be like “nah I won” lol
They would both be dead. Afterblows are a thing; even if you hit the opponent first, if you come out of the encounter wounded, you're gonna have a hard time.
No flashy moves, no spinning, no five minute-long sequence where they both play to catch each other's edge.
Real life stances, simple but effective cuts, and no second chances after a fatal mistake. I am impressed that back in the mid 90s the few people that represented fencing in movies did it correctly. Then again, this is Kurosawa

The actor who played Kyuzou never even held a sword until this movie. The editing makes him look like a master swordsman
