On the day of his suicide #seppuku, Yukio Mishima made an impassioned speech to army troops, calling on them to rise up and “restore the emperor”. Mishima was one of the most influential Japanese writers of the 20th century and was considered for the Nobel Prize three times. He voiced his political ideas publicly and was ready to go a long way for his ideas. As his suicide notes later revealed, he expected to fail, but hoped that his seppuku would transform Japan.
Taken from the fourth chapter of Paul Schrader’s brilliant 1985 film “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters” depicting the life and work of the writer Yukio Mishima. This last day brings to life the ritual suicide committed by Mishima on November 25, 1970 in Japan. This act of seppuku did not go according to plan, and according to many media critics and politicians of the time, the suicide was also pointless: at best, an artistic performance by a showman and, at worst, a futile gesture by a deranged extremist.
Mishima was a hardcore nationalist, who wanted to restore the divinity of the emperor, strengthen Japan’s army and discard the country’s pacifist constitution. He felt western values were invading and weakening Japan like a cancer.

conclusion, never try to throw the goverment and army at the lunchtime.
This movie and its soundtrack are works of art.
I remember reading 'Runaway Horses' as a teen and just being blown away by it. I often wondered how much texture I missed from the Japanese to English translation.
Well, he just irritating the JSDF, not even helicopters and hecklers and jeers drown his parts of his speech tho
His predictions ultimately came to pass. If he gave that speech today he would undoubtedly gain more support
The brutal truth is: Japan today is nothing more than a US puppet with no independent foreign policies of its own. The West does not fully accept Japan as one of their own (eg: AUKUS, Five-Eyes), and neither does ASEAN states.
If his still alive till this time. He will be very disappointed with Japan right now.
Japan lost its spirit and was left with servile people who were just slaves to society after the war. It is clear from the fact that even though they have high ability, they are in decline after the post-war reconstruction, and they are beginning to be exploited by other countries.
6:00 Ode to Showa Restoration
Mishima should’ve brought a loud speaker
Ignore the stop sign.9:01
When you go Seppuku, get a good head chopper offer. Kimitake Hiraoka had a crummy one and needed a replacement to fill in.
cringe this dude was so cucked by nationalism (90% of his books were about being a cuck) that he fkn gutted himself lmao
What did he say in his speech
If his coup was successful by attempting to restore the emperor's power and overthrow the post-WW2 constitution, he would probably be labeled as a terrorist by the government.
Bisexual legendario 👍👍👍👍
dang avangardists
he laments of how japan was destroyed
he laments about japan's culture being trampled upon
he laments how western degeneracy numbed japanese warrior spirit
he laments. he laments all of that.
but he didn't do any sh*t about it.
he only cares about himself, of his own sadness, of "oh woe is me i'm living in degeneracy so sad".
he did absolutely nothing to change it.
all he did is to """""honorably"""" suicide. leaving his 'beloved' nation on it's own. he only cared about 'saving' his own 'honor'.
all while the actual heroes were working their a*s off trying to rebuild the country, improve people's lives, restart the economy, working around US' hegemony over japan.
but who cares about them right? they didn't boast their achievements!
we should care about guy like mishima who love to flaunt his romanticism and idealism but with no real work whatsoever!
A tragic person who drowned in the past, he did not realize the new generation's wish, or Japan don't want to be fall into another world war
What song are they singing?
Today Japan completely became the United States of America. It was a complete mistake that there was no self defense force member to support Yukio Mishima.
There was a screening of this film that had writer/director Paul Schrader in attendance this weekend. You may find these videos interesting.
